Περίληψη
Η ανάδυση περιφερειακών δυνάμεων, που επιδιώκουν να ανταγωνιστούν την ηγεμονία των ΗΠΑ σε περιφερειακό επίπεδο, είναι το κρισιμότερο χαρακτηριστικό του διεθνούς συστήματος σήμερα. Ο ανταγωνισμός για επιπρόσθετη ισχύ μεταξύ μεγάλων δυνάμεων δύναται να μεταβάλει τον μεταξύ τους συσχετισμό ισχύος. Βάσει μιας συστημικής θεωρίας των διεθνών σχέσεων, αυτήν του δομικού ρεαλισμού, που έχει επίκεντρό της το διακρατικό ανταγωνισμό με όρους ισχύος, εξετάζεται ο βαθμός των διεθνολογικών αναπροσαρμογών σε κρίσιμες γεωγραφικές περιοχές του πλανήτη, όπως η νοτιοανατολική Ασία και η ευρωπαϊκή ήπειρος. Ακόμη, εξετάζεται ο ρόλος της ομάδας κρατών BRICS ως επίδοξων ανταγωνιστών των ΗΠΑ.
