Η σχέση της γνωστικής γήρανσης με την οσφρητική ικανότητα: Σύγκριση νέων, μεσηλίκων και ηλικιωμένων ως προς την ικανότητα ταυτοποίησης οσμών

Περίληψη
Η παρούσα έρευνα αποσκοπούσε να εξετάσει τη σχέση της γνωστικής γήρανσης με την οσφρητική ικανότητα. Το δείγμα της έρευνας αποτελούνταν από 75 άτομα ηλικίας 20 έως 90 ετών, κατανεμημένα ισομερώς σε τρεις ομάδες με βάση την ηλικία: στους «Νέους Ενήλικες» (20-28 ετών), στους «Μεσήλικες» (48-58 ετών) και στους «Ηλικιωμένους» (75-90 ετών). Σε όλους τους συμμετέχοντες χορηγήθηκαν δοκιμασίες μέτρησης των εκτελεστικών λειτουργιών, μια δοκιμασία μέτρησης της εργαζόμενης μνήμης και η σχεδιασμένη και αναπτυγμένη για τους σκοπούς της παρούσας έρευνας, Δοκιμασία Οσφρητικής Ταυτοποίησης (ΔΟΤ). Τα αποτελέσματα έδειξαν ότι η γνωστική γήρανση συνδέεται αρνητικά με την οσφρητική ικανότητα. Ειδικότερα, διαφάνηκε ότι σε σύγκριση τόσο με τους νέους όσο και με τους μεσήλικες, οι ηλικιωμένοι έχουν σημαντικά χαμηλότερη ικανότητα ταυτοποίησης οσμών. Επίσης, βρέθηκε ότι η προϊούσα ηλικία συνδέεται με έκπτωση των υψηλής ιεραρχίας γνωστικών λειτουργιών, κι αυτές συνδέονται με την οσφρητική ικανότητα. Ωστόσο, αξίζει να σημειωθεί ότι το μορφωτικό επίπεδο αποτελεί εμπλεκόμενη μεταβλητή στις σχέσεις αυτές.
