Αξιοποιώντας το σημασιολογικό κριτήριο στην ετυμολογική έρευνα: επανετυμολογήσεις του κοινού νεοελληνικού λεξιλογίου

Abstract

In this article, new data are adduced in order to propose new or improved etymologies regarding words of the Standard Modern Greek vocabulary, such as θράψαλο 'short fin squid', μάλλιασε η γλώσσα μου 'I keep (unsuccessfully) telling you', μελομακάρονο 'a kind of Greek sweet', παραμάνα 'safety pin', ρεμούλα 'fraud, scam', ρεμάλι 'scum', φόλα 'poisoned bait'. In all the above cases, the older etymologies have been revised, as they do not fulfil the semantic criterion, i.e. as they fail to explain the semantic shift from the meaning of the assumed etymon.
