Association between psychological capital and sleep quality among old age adults: Preliminary evidence
Abstract
Ageing is related to various psychological and physiological changes, including alterations in sleep patterns in older adults. However, the positive psychological factors predicting sleep quality in old age are not well-understood in the literature. Therefore, this preliminary investigation aimed to explore the association and contribution of psychological capital to sleep quality among older adults in India. Sleep quality and psychological capital of fifty-seven older adults (52.6% male, 47.4% female) aged 65–80 were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Psychological Capital Questionnaire. Product-moment correlation and regression analysis were employed to analyse the data. Findings indicate that living in urban areas and sleeping alone are associated with lower subjective sleep quality. Furthermore, psychological capital, particularly its components i.e., self-efficacy and resilience are found to significantly contribute to sleep quality among older adults (p < .01). Results provide preliminary evidence for the association and contribution of PsyCap to sleep quality, suggesting that these components could be targeted when planning specific strategies for improving sleep quality in the ageing population.
