Workplace psychosocial risk factors in professional bus drivers: mapping the risk factors’ structure and investigating their interconnectivity with socio-psychological concepts through network analysis

Abstract

This study applied network analysis to examine the complexity of the interrelations among the multiple workplace psychosocial risks that bus drivers in Greece experience. Workplace psychosocial risks are among the major concerns in occupational safety and health and their management remains a serious challenge for organizations. The driving profession has been ranked consistently as highly hazardous while in Greece remains unexplored. We combined the Job Demands-Resources (JD-R) framework, with socio-psychological concepts, such as Organizational Identification and Relative Deprivation, to explore the combined interconnections of workplace psychosocial factors with various organizational and individual outcomes. A cross-sectional survey was conducted, and the psychosocial factors were assessed using COPSOQ-III self-report questionnaire in a sample of 287 bus drivers. The descriptive results revealed that the highest psychosocial risk for bus drivers in Greece originated from organizational factors such as Quality of Leadership, Influence and Recognition. Network analysis provided a map that initially confirmed the two main dimensions of JD-R theory while providing new insights into the pathways that connect Demands and Resources factors to burnout and job satisfaction. The integration of Organizational Identification and Relative Deprivation into the network inspired interpretations from multiple perspectives while the overall structure of the network presented a distinct cluster of job-content characteristics. It was concluded that workplace psychosocial risks exhibit systemic and diffuse associations throughout the network, hence encouraging their approach from the perspective of dynamic chain interactions. It also supported that the integration of classical socio-psychological theories within organizational contexts may provide practical benefits and theoretical renewal.
