Abstract

Films always start with an idea. An idea about a story creates thoughts, gives birth to characters and a plot. The screenwriter takes those elements and weaves them into a script. The script depicts the idea of the writer through settings, characters, scenes, dialogues and pauses. It captures action and emotion. The director is the one who breathes life to the script pages, transforming them into a living, breathing cinematic experience to address all senses on the big screen. The film’s artistic and dramatic aspects that reach the theaters are a matter of a number of choices. From the first idea to the final cut directors shape not only what the audience  sees but also how they feel. The short film “Acheron” is an example of how the idea is transformed into film and it is analyzed as a case study by its screenwriter Mata Kourti and its director Konstantina Papadopoulou. It is an awarded short film that follows the story of a couple on their city break.
