Abstract

The article describes the connection between two forms of eugenics, positive and negative, as well as the transition from the former to the latter, which proves that there was no solid dividing line between them. During the 20th century, eugenic discourse targeted any group or individual considered deviant for racial and ethnic purity or dangerous for public health. Positivist criminological thought was historically shaped under the decisive influence of biological, eugenic theories, which attempted to explain deviance and criminality through natural and hereditary characteristics of the subject. The dominance of negative eugenics was halted at the end of the Second World War. On the contrary, positive eugenics survives to this day, having undergone hybridizations in a disguised form that tend to acquire particular momentum in modern postmodern societies, creating new forms of manipulation and assuming the role of a mechanism for biopolitical control of the population with a dystopian character.
