State-corporate crimes and risks in mass transportation: The case of the Tempi train tragedy
Abstract
The study examines, from the perspective of state-business crime, the railway tragedy at Evangelismos Tempi, Larissa, which occurred on the evening of February 28, 2023, resulting in the death of fifty-seven (57) people and dozens of injuries. The article focuses on the theory and research on state-business crime and focuses on the case of public transport. Aspects of the social organization of state-business crimes are analyzed with an emphasis on the normalization of practices serving mutually reinforcing interests in combination with the implementation of neoliberal "developmental" policies and austerity measures in Greece, trends that created a framework of risk in rail transport. Subsequently, the qualitative research conducted on this topic is presented and then the data produced are analyzed. The authors conclude that the Tempi railway tragedy is not an "accident" resulting exclusively from "human error" but a crime caused by state-business activity, highlighting its deeper structural and systemic origins.
