Representations of social outrage movements in Greek print media narratives: The ‘Indignants’ and the ‘Tempi movement’

Abstract

This article examines how the Greek print media highlighted, through their narratives, the social anger expressed by the Indignants movement (2011) and the Tempi movement (2023), two collective mobilizations emerging in distinct periods of crisis. Focusing on the coverage of three Greek newspapers – I Kathimerini, Ta Nea and To Vima – the study investigates the extent to which journalistic narratives contributed to the empowerment of these movements. It further aims to identify and interpret potential shifts in tone, within the broader framework and orientation of journalistic storytelling, in relation to the evolving dynamics of those two movements

Stefanos Pnevmatikos, Paris-Panthéon-Assas University

Stefanos Pnevmatikos is a teaching researcher at the Université Panthéon-Assas in Paris, in the Department of Information and Communication. His research focuses on the analysis of political
and journalistic discourse, political communication, and cultural studies. His doctoral dissertation
centered on the study of the representations shaped by the media during the Greek crisis of the
2010s. Through the analysis of political speeches and journalistic articles — Greek, German,
and French — he highlighted the democratic deficit of the supranational institutional bodies of
the European Union in relation to the decision-making process for managing the Greek crisis.
Today, he continues his research and teaching work in France, where he teaches, among other,
the following courses: Introduction to Mass Media (1st year), Research and Current Affairs (3rd
year), Methodology Seminar for Dissertation Writing (4th year), and Mass Media and Civil Society
