Un couvent athonite ignoré du Xe siècle
Les études concernant le couvent italien ‘de l'Amalfitain' ou ‘des Amalfitains', qui exista au Mont Athos jusqu'au XIIIe siècle, confondent deux couvents différents: l'un est celui des Amalfitains, l'autre, dont l'existence fut ignorée jusqu'ici à cause de cette confusion, fut fondé au Mont Athos après 981 et avant 993 par Léon de Bénévent, frère du duc de Bénévent Pandolf II. Pour les Byzantins, ce dernier couvent représentait dans la communauté athonite le Bénévent, mais aussi le catépanat d'Italie, à la disparition duquel (1071) il n'a probablement pas survécu.
