Abstract

This article aims to approach, present and highlight the issue of banditry and


armatolism from the perspective of modern historiography. The main body of the


article consists two primary parts. The first part delves into the subject by a briefly


presenting the reasons why a rayah (non-Muslim subject under Ottoman rule) might


decide to secede from their community and start a new life at the mountains. It also


analyzes the structure and organization of these armed groups, the reasons why


mountainous areas served their actions, similarities and differences between thieves


and armatoles. This section aims to analyse the ways in which thieves and armatoles


are presented through folk tradition in older and modern historiography. The second


part, taking into account what has previously been written and analyzed, presents


how this topic can be incorporated into the classroom of a contemporary school. It


focuses on the didactic use of the issue through modern teaching methods and the


utilisation of new technologies.
