Abstract

The contribution of the Ionian Islands to the Greek revolution is undeniable. A multitude of sources highlight both the reasons and the magnitude of this. The stance taken by the British Administration of the Ionian Islands is also clear, and it was nothing but neutral. This view is also reinforced by the original material from Lefkada, which, after being transcribed, was studied in detail. The archive is named "Property Confiscated by Lefkada Residents Taking Part in the Revolution of 1821", and comes from the General State Archives. It is a digitized, handwritten archive, mainly in Italian and secondarily, fragmentarily in Greek. It is placed in the period 1821-1823, while the majority of the documents are about the island of Lefkada. The archive includes proclamations and letters concerning decisions of the British Administration in favor of the neutrality of the Ionian Islands during the Greek Revolution. Furthermore, the measures taken against violators of the neutrality law are identified, as well as the documents concerning the confiscations of the properties of the residents of Lefkada, who violate the relevant legislation and take part in the Revolution. More detailed information is obtained both on individuals, through the nominal reports that exist, and on the confiscations of property. Thus, we have reports on individuals who have been violators of the law, providing information on their assets and the type of crop. In summary, the aim of this study is to highlight the attitude of the Administration towards the Greek Revolution, the study of the persons recorded as participants in the Revolution, as well as the mechanisms for exercising power with the aim of ensuring the compliance of the local population.
