Abstract

Wright Knox arrived in Ithaca in February 1821 as the new Resident of the island, which was part of the Ionian States. In addition to Ithaca he commanded a group of neighboring Islands that belonged to Ithaca’s region, including Kalamos which became a major hot spot for refugees. The topic presented in this article is the correspondence between the Ithaca’s Resident and Kalamos’s Commander with the secretaries and the Lord High Commissioner himself, focusing on a pivotal historical turning point. The content of that correspondence is divided into four key parts: a) The Greek war of independence and its Heroes. Refugees, human trafficking and slavery, b) The British Policy toward the Greek revolt. Anticipation of the uprising and the stance of Neutrality, c) Governance and Finances. Administration and revenues of the Ionian State, d) Public Health and Trade and Sanitary restriction measures.
