Abstract

In the impoverished districts of Drapetsona and Keratsini, internal migrants were forced to coexist with a significant number of impoverished refugees from the Asia Minor Catastrophe. Taking advantage of the favorable institutional framework, the residents established political associations founded on shared identities and collective goals. These associations aligned with political parties that addressed their needs and interests, acting as a bridge between the official party discourse and the local community, while fostering a reciprocal feedback relationship with the political organizations. Ultimately, these political associations, in conjunction with the prevailing political and economic circumstances, played a crucial role in shaping the electoral behavior of voters in both regions. This article offers an in-depth analysis of the political associations that emerged in the two districts of Piraeus during the Interwar period, correlates their activities with the political transformations of the time, and highlights the resulting electoral outcomes on the local and national political scene.
