The use of literary examples in dictionaries: the case of the Historical Dictionary of Modern Greek

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to examine the question of the use of literary examples and quotations in dictionaries with special emphasis on the Historical Dictionary of Modern Greek (Academy of Athens). The whole issue is related to the broader issues of choice of examples for lexicographic use, the interrelation of common language, literary language and local dialects, as well as a number of individual issues of linguistic, literary, dialectological and lexicographical nature, which will be analysed in this article.
