From the Greek City of Elis to the Reviver of the Modern Olympic Games
Abstract
This article aims to examine the transition from the sanctuary of Olympia and the Greek city of Elis to the revival of the modern Olympic Games. Following the end of the ancient Games and the gradual burial of the site (late-antique prohibitions, destruction, earthquakes), Olympia fell into a long period of oblivion before being rediscovered by scholars and through the major excavation campaigns of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Building on this foundation, the article highlights Pierre de Coubertin’s appropriation of the Greek legacy—also shaped by the educational model of the English public schools—and the formulation of “Olympism” as a philosophy linking sport, culture, and education. From the creation of the IOC (1894) and the Athens Games (1896) to contemporary issues (legacy, values, Agenda 2020) on the horizon of Paris 2024, Olympism emerges as a political and cultural object in constant reconfiguration.
