About the Journal

Focus and Scope

Published without interruption since 1969, The Greek Review of Social Research is the oldest Greek journal for the social sciences and one of the first to adopt the blind peer review system. An editorial committee of three EKKE researchers and two external social scientists appointed by the EKKE’s Board of Administration for a  period of three years is responsible for the publication procedures and the standards of the Review’s scholarship. The editorial committee is supported by a scientific committee of distinguished social scientists whose role is advisory as regards the development and dissemination of the journal.

Peer Review Process

Articles are submitted to the double blind peer review system. They are sent to two reviewers and in instances of conflicting evaluation to a third.

Publication Frequency

The journal is published in print form semiannually.

Submitted articles are published electronically immediately upon successful completion of the evaluation and editing process.

The print edition is published after the electronic publication of the articles.

Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public contributes to global knowledge exchange. We encourage authors to deposit their articles, as well as data underlying the publications, in institutional and/or other appropriate subject repositories.

Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement

The following information is mainly based upon the guidelines for “Publication Ethics and Malpractice Statement” (PEMS) and on the “Internal Regulations Statement” of the Greek Review of Social Research.

  1. General Information

The Greek Review of Social Research is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published bi-annually in digital and print form by the National Centre for Social Research (EKKE). The journal is full open access and submissions are free of any charges.

The journal invites original submissions (max: 9000 words) from a theoretical, empirical or policy perspective in the following subject areas: Social theory, Methods and techniques of social sciences, Sociology of institutions, Sociology of development and social transformation, Political Sociology, Urban Sociology, Rural Sociology, Sociology of the family, Sociology of education, Sociology of work, Sociology of health, Social Anthropology, Political Science, Social Geography, Social Psychology, Demography, Criminology, Labour relations, Social integration and exclusion, Social Policy, Gender relations, Cultural Studies, Mass media and Communication Studies, Social networks.  The Review also welcomes short doctoral dissertation presentations and book reviews in special sections (max: 2000 words).

Apart from its regular issues, the Greek Review of Social Research publishes three types of distinctive issues:

1.1. Special Issues consisting of collections of articles concerning specific subject areas contributing to the advancement of scientific dialogue in the relative area. These issues may be Greek or English. Proposals for such issues are submitted to the Editorial Committee and initially assessed regarding their significance, cohesion and scientific worth, before undergoing the double blind peer review.  The reviewing process is followed by the Editorial Board in collaboration with the editors responsible for the general introduction. Special issues should not be longer than regular ones.

1.2. Subject Issues, decided upon by the Editorial Committee in view of submitted material or after a specific call for papers. The double blind peer review is followed. Such issues may also contain non-related articles.

1.3. GRSR special publications. The Greek Review of Social Research may decide to publish and edit special issues. Such issues must be of particular scientific interest as regards their subject and scientific quality. They may include previously published articles or/and translations of foreign language articles, providing these are deemed essential for the issues’ completeness.  The contents of such issues are not subject to double blind peer review process and therefore their authors cannot claim publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Such special issues are separately numbered and their publication does not follow a regular periodicity

The procedure from an article’s submission to its publication is monitored through the digital publication system. Following the successful completion of the review procedure, layout and editing, articles are then digitally published.

Special Issues’ contents are digitally published following completion of the above procedures for all the Issues’ articles. Their print version follows. The Editorial Committee’s special subject Issues are published in digital and print form and numbered separately.

2. Editorial Board Duties

The Review’s Editorial Board, consists of three Researchers of the National Centre for Social Research and two external members of the Greek academic community is responsible for the planning, rigorous publication procedures and maintaining of the Review’s high standard of scholarship. The Review’s International Scientific Board (renewed every five years) provides further support and advice regarding the planning, realizing and peer reviewing of the journal. A fully digital publication management system ensures time saving from initial submission to publication, providing authors with the possibility to follow the processing of their submissions.

2.1. Publication Decisions

The Editorial Board is responsible for which of the articles submitted will proceed to publication. The Editorial Board reserves the right to check whether submissions are original and adhere to the Journal’s high scientific standards. In the event submissions are found not to comply with the above (e.g. they have been published elsewhere, or in the instance of plagiarism or other form of misconduct) they will not be published.

3. Peer Reviewing and Fair Play

Peer reviewing is carried out by two reviewers, and, in case of disagreement, a third one. Reviewers are expected to fulfill their task on the sole basis of scientific worth, without consideration of ethnic, gender, religious belief, sexual orientation, citizenship and political affiliations. Reviewers are generally obliged to respond promptly and not delay the review process. Any invited referee who feels unqualified to review the manuscript or knows that its prompt review will be impossible should immediately notify the Editors and/or the administrative staff and decline the invitation to review so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.

3.1. Confidentiality

All submissions are treated confidentially. The Editorial Board and the administrative staff will not disclose any information about submitted manuscripts to anyone except from the authors and/or the potential reviewers.

3.2. Conflict of Interest

Peer reviewers who have conflict of interest resulting from any type of collaboration with any of the author(s), should immediately notify the Editors to declare their conflicts of interest and decline the invitation to review so that alternative reviewers can be contacted.

In addition, unpublished material disclosed in a submitted manuscript must not be used in a reviewer’s own research without the express written consent of the author(s).

3.3. Standards of objectivity

Reviews should be conducted objectively and observations formulated clearly with supporting arguments so that author(s) can use them for improving the manuscript. Personal criticism of the author(s) is not acceptable.

3.4. Acknowledgement of sources

Reviewers should identify relevant published work that has not been cited by the author(s). Any statement that is an observation, derivation or argument that has been reported in previous publications should be accompanied by the relevant citation. A reviewer should also notify the Editorial Board of any substantial similarity or overlap between the manuscript under consideration and any other manuscript (published or unpublished) of which they have personal knowledge.

4. Responsibilities of Author(s)

4.1. Originality

Authors should ensure that their submissions are entirely original and have not been published elsewhere. Work by other author(s) should be clearly and fully cited according to the citation specifications of the journal. Authors should cite publications which have been influential in determining the nature of their submission.

4.2. Authorship of the submission

Authorship should be limited to the following persons who: (i) have made significant contributions to the conception, design, execution, data acquisition, or analysis/interpretation of the study; (ii) drafted the manuscript or revised it critically for important intellectual content; and (iii) have seen and approved the final version of the paper and agreed to its submission for publication. All persons who made substantial contributions to the work reported in the manuscript (such as technical help, writing and editing assistance, general support) but who do not meet the criteria for authorship must not be listed as an author, but should be acknowledged in the “Acknowledgements” section after their written permission to be named as been obtained. The corresponding author should ensure that all appropriate coauthors (according to the above definition) and no inappropriate co-authors are included in the author list and verify that all co-authors have seen and approved the final version of the manuscript and agreed to its submission for publication.

4.3. Retractions and corrections of mistakes

In case an author discovers a significant error or inaccuracy in the published work, it is the author’s obligation to promptly notify the journal’s Editorial Board or publisher and cooperate with them to either retract the paper or to publish an appropriate erratum.

4.4. Peer Review

Authors are obliged to participate in the peer review process and cooperate fully by responding promptly to Editors’ requests for material such as raw data, various types of clarifications, and/or proof of ethics approval, and copyright permissions. In the case of a first decision of “revisions necessary”, authors should respond to the reviewers’ comments systematically, point by point, and in a timely manner, revising and re-submitting their manuscript to the journal by the deadline given.

4.5. Financial support and potential conflicts of interest

Authors should include a statement disclosing any financial or other substantive conflicts of interest that may be construed to influence the results or interpretation of their manuscript. All sources of financial support for the project should be disclosed including, where appropriate, project/grant agreement numbers.
