Author Biographies
D.J. Pallis

Having gradueted from the Medical School in Athens (1964) Dr.
D.J. Pallis received his training in psychiatry and psychotherapy in
England and in Scotland (1966-1971). He worked with the
Medical Research Council at the Clinical Psychiatry Unit in
Chichester (1972 1978) and with the Institute of Child Health in
Athens (1978-1980). A Member of the Royal College of
Psychiatrists since 1973, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of
Medicine from the University of Aberdeen in 1977. Apart from
contributing to scientific journals, he is the author of three
monographs concerned with the psychiatrists’ orientation to treatments
(1969), the assessment of suicide risk (1977) and the
problem of psychological disturbance of children in Greece (to be
published later this year). He currently lives in England.

Helen Agathonos

Helen Agathonos attended high school at Pierce College and
graduated from Campbell High School, California. She studied
Social Work at Deree College from where she received her
Diploma (1965) and her Bachelor of Science (1972). She then
received her Master’s Degree in Counseling from Ball State University
(1978). She has been working at the Institute of Child
Health since 1965, first as a research social worker, and since
1979, as a Director of the Family Relations Section under the
Dept, of Social Psychiatry. Mrs. Agathonos has attended many
training programs abroad related to research methodology
(England, 1965), child abuse and neglect (England, 1977, 1982),
mental retardation (USA, 1976). Since 1976 she has been working
mainly in the field of child abuse and neglect. Presently, she is
directing a research project on child abuse and a service to
patients and their families. Apart from contributing to scientific
journals, she is the author of a monograph titled Families of
Children with Down’s Syndrome in Greece (1978).

Laura Osterweis-Stangos, Institute of Child Health, «Aghia Sophia»

Mrs. Stangos completed her graduate training in social work at
Columbia University, New York in 1973 and in 1975 she was
elected to the American Academy of Certified Social Workers. She
was employed by Child and Family Services in Austin, Texas
(1973-1975). a mental health and counseling facility. After having
moved to Greece in 1976, Mrs. Stangos became the Scientific
Director of the Community Center of Kareas, part of the Greek
National Welfare Organization (1977-1978). From 1978-1979 she
was a member of the Health Planning Team of the Office of the
Minister of Social Services where she served on several legislative
committees and on the Greek National Committee for the Year of
the Child. Since 1978 Mrs. Stangos has been working at the Institute
of Child Health where her primary research concern has
been institutional care of children. She has also been involved in
psychological interviewing and evaluation for Type A Behavior
and heart disease
