Author Biographies
Emmanuel-George G. Vakalo, University of Michigan

Emmanuel-George G. Vakalo wasborn in Greece. After graduat­
ing from Athens College he wasenrolled at Cornell University. He 

received the Bachelor of Architecture, Masterof Architecture and
Master of Regional Planning degrees from that institution. Cur­
rently, he is an instructor at the College of Architecture and Urban
Planning of the University of Michigan. At the same time he is
pursuing doctoral studies at the Doctoral Program in Urban and
Regional Planning at the same university. His dissertation addresses
the problem of special-purpose regional definition with emphasis
on thedesignation and evaluation of health planning regions. His
research and teaching interests include urban and regional theory
and the application of quantitative methods in planning. He is an
associate member of the American Institute of Planners.

Demetrius J. Plessas, University of Michigan

Demetrius J. Plessas was born inAthens, Greece in 1939 where he
received his primary andsecondary education. He migrated to the
United States in 1959 where he received a B.A. and M.A. in
Economics, M.U.P., and the Ph.D. in Resource Planning and Con­
servation. He is presently an Associate Professor in the Department
of Health Planning and Administration, School of Public Health,
The University of Michiganwhere he teaches environmental plan­
ning and policy analysis, and regional health planning. He has
served as consultant to numerous governmental and international
agencies in the application of analysis to health ;. id environmental
policy problems. Dr. Plessas is presently completing research spon­
sored by the Greek Center of Planning and Ei momie Research
dealing with the social costs of air pollution anc. work-related in­
juries of the Greater Athens Region.
