Ethnic and national identities : a constructivist approach

Θωμάς Γούμενος
Abstract
This article is concerned with the theoretical conception and the analysis of national and ethnic identities. In particular, the article describes in the first place the core arguments of the dominant -in the relevant bibliography- constructivist approach and traces certain differentiations that have emerged within this approach. Consequently, the article attempts to incorporate various constructivist arguments and views into a coherent, explicitly relational perspective of collective identities. Finally, based on this relational perspective, the article delineates a framework of analysis of ethnic and national identities; this framework aspires to highlight the constructed and contested character of identities without denying their significance and their consequential character in cases of national antagonisms, ethnic conflicts and self-determination movements.
