The Cypriot Communist Party (AKEL) and the European Union

Γιώργος Χαραλάμπους
Abstract
This paper seeks to examine and explain the evolution of AKEL’s towards European integration from the late 1980s until today. It particularly considers the impact of AKEL’s particular characteris-dcs and the distinction between political profile and programmatic positions. On the basis of a recurring message in the existing literature on the radical left and in order to iliumi-nate larger questions on communist and radical left party politics, the empirical analysis is framed within the strategic dilemma between ideological purity and political pragmatism that communist parties have been facing since their inception.
