Abstract

In the introductory paper of this special issue, the guest editor attempts to clarify the similarities that unite the two concepts, gender and crisis, insisting on their usual, common sense perception that prevents theoretical investigation. While the gender dichotomy makes the repercussions of the present economic crisis worse for women, the conceptual clarification of both notions presents itself as absolutely necessary in view of the possibility that a way out of the present situation -which undermines democracy and the universality of citizenship- can be elaborated. Indeed, if both gender and the actual crisis obstruct the functioning of democracy, at the same time both can be seen as potential loci for discord and disruption of the existing order.
