Demographic changes and civil society: what are the potential links?

Αλεξάνδρα Τραγάκη
Abstract

This is a commentary discussing the potential impact of demography on civil society. The departure point lies on the assumption that demographic trends affect both sides that determine the size and strength of civil society: offer (defined as the participation rate) and demand (defined as the range of activities implied by social needs). It discusses the main demographic trends and their implications on the social, economic and political dimensions and investigates potential links with civic engagement. It concludes that demography, on its own, can hardly be identified as a crucial feature for the future of civil society. However, if combined with other contextual factors (mainly efficient governance, transparency and trust) it may provide a pool of highly qualified volunteers capable to cope with state inefficiencies emerging from the demographic and social challenges.
