Fear and democracy in contemporary societies

Παναγιώτης Καφετζής
Abstract
Democracy may be understood in a manner different from that of structural functionalism and at a level other than the macrosociological. Democracy may be conceptually approached through a perspective emphasizing fear, which is central to the contemporary risk societies, facing wars and terror. Fear overdetermines the construction of political representation. Drawing on the work of Foucault, Virilio, Schmitt and Marcuse, it is possible to engage in an analysis of the discourse on war and fear.
