The Federation of Alternative Ecologists: The Greek green experiment

Ιωσήφ Μποτετζάγιας
Abstract
The present paper offers an insight into the historical development of the Greek political Ecology, from the emergence of the first groups in the early eighties to the collapse of the Federation of Ecological and Alternative Organisations (FEA) in the early nineties. This article aims both to cover the gap in the historiography of the Greek Green movement as well as facilitating the further theoretical elaboration of the reasons leading to the collapse of political ecology in Greece, by registering the facts of their development. It highlights the fortuitous problems, such as the activists’ intra-personal relations and the nature/timing of the challenges facing them, which foretold their failure, and concludes it was these -rather than any major ideological differences between the competing factions- that led to the collapse of the first Greek green party.
