Abstract

In this article we attempt to analyze the concept and mechanisms of peacebuilding. In subsequent sections we analyze internal and external parameters of the Afghan crisis. We finally offer some conclusions concerning possibilities and limits of peace-building in Afghanistan. The thesis of this article is that peace-building is a process that aims at combating the deeper causes of a conflict. Since internal causes are influenced by international problems (uneven development, the North/South divide, hegemonic behavior) we argue that peace-building under these circumstances cannot be implemented if one does not put emphasis on these, external, aspects too.
