The representation of business associations at the E.U. level
Abstract
This article examines the dynamic relationship between national and supranational business associations in the eu as well as the influence of both in their respective levels of activity. Contrary to some widespread views, it is argued that there is no trend for the supranational business associations to substitute the national ones.
The latter, benefiting from the overall developments in the European and world economy, experience a remarkable increase in their local influence as the Greek case demonstrates. The result is that corporatist arrangements become “artificial” in the sense, that they increasingly serve legitimation purposes rather than the need for real compromises.
