Parties and elections: the restructuring of a long relationship
Abstract
This article discusses the relationship between political parties and local administration on the basis of the 1998 municipal elections. A historical analysis of the role of political parties at the local level indicates new elements in the long history of party involvement in local politics. It is argued that the role of political parties is changing, and that these changes should be seen in the context of the institutional reforms at the local administration level. The article also discusses the development of the main Greek political parties, which have acquired the characteristics of the «cartel» party model.
