Ορθόδοξος Χριστιανισμός και Εθνικισμός: Δύο πτυχές της σύγχρονης ελληνικής πολιτικής κουλτούρας

Abstract

It is obvious that there is a reinforcement of religiosity and nationalism in Greece. One could speak of «identity crisis» and of the return of what has been «repulsed» in greek history. The orthodox church is still characterized by its «fusion» with the state and its refusal of historicity, rationality and the natural Right. It relies on the «fusion» of the individual within an imaginary community, and it supports the escape out of the world, thus denying the possibility of actively transforming the world through responsible individuals. These characteristics have marked the greek mentality and greek political culture, beeing among other factors the main obstacles to the modernization and constitution of a civil society; besides they reinforce a defensive and self isolating attitude towards Western Europe. This mentality favours the perpetuation of a communalistic ideology, which is a constituent of modern greek nationalism as well.
