Abstract
The author presents the peculiar introduction of communist organisation and ideology to a rural community on the northeast side of the island of Lesbos, Greece. The political radicalisation of the peasants follows different paths from those introduced by the formal marxiste theory which are based on the model of the working class. Hence the adoption of communism at this place far away from central power, presents features associated with the purely rural character of the society. The teleological prevails over the political, morality over tactics, the religious over the mundane, the patriotic over the inter- nationalistic.
