Abstract
N. Mouzelis examines the role of the state as a crucial factor determining the socioeconomic and political developments in societies that can be described as late-late industrialisers. Based on a comparative study of Balkan and South American societies, this article is of both theoretical and empirical interest and provides a critical assessment of the «peculiarity» of the state’s role and performance in «semi-peripheral» societies.
