The belief system of Spyros Kyprianou

Νίκος Χριστοδουλίδης
Abstract
This article constructs the belief system of the former president of the Republic of Cyprus, Spyros Kyprianou and examines its impact on his decision making. Three crucial decisions of Spyros Kyprianou are examined: (a) his position in the American proposal for solution of the Cyprus Problem in 1978, (b) his stance in the UN negotiations for the solution of the Cyprus Problem in late 1984-early 1985, and (c) his reaction on the proposal of the Greek Government in late 1986-early 1987 for Cyprus’ application in the then European Economic Community. The article does not examine the efficacy of these decisions but examines the linkages between a leader’s belief system and his decision making.
