Deep - Freezing of solipeds semen in pellects
Abstract
A new method of preserving solipeds semen by deep-freezing is described. The semen collected from 1 stallion and 1 jackass once every 5 days, was diluted to 1:1 or 1:2 with a lactose-yolk-glycerol extender and pelleted without equilibration, by dropping 0.1 CC of semen into the holes of a slice of dry ice. Pellets were stored in liquid nitrogen to —196"C. After thawing the pellets in skimmed and pasterized milk, an average of 50% (20 - 65) of the spermatozoa showed progressive motility. A total of 32 mares were inseminated artif ically with pelleted semen. The conception rate of the mares on the basis of parturition amounted to 21,43% (6/28). The fertility rate of the stallion s semen amounted to 10,53% (2/19) and the fertility rate of the jackass s one amounted to 30,77% (4/13), exceeding that of stallion s semen by 20,24% (table Π)
