The geographic dissemination of vernacular architecture features of the region of Achrida related to the role of the Greek inhabitants during the late Turkish domination
Abstract
In this paper, a study on some vernacular architecture features of the traditional houses of Achrida (Ohrid) is first presented. These features are related to those of the neighbouring towns of Monastiri (Bitola) and Krousovo (Krushevo), where Greek population flourished during the late Turkish domi nation (19th and the beginning of 20th century), as well as to those of the Mijaci region. The four basic house types and the images of the settlements of (1) Mavrovo - Galicnik, (2) Achrida, (3) Krousovo, (4) Monastiri, form four corresponding successive stages of the traditional house architecture history of the region during the Turkish domination.
Furthermore, the originality and the geographic dissemination of these features, that are seen also all over the Balkan peninsula and Asia Minor, are investigated. The similarities, observed among traditional house types situated in distant places, verify the existence of a common vernacular architecture that was developed by the people of the Ottoman empire.
