Districts and roads in Yenidje Vardar at the end of 19th century

Βασίλης Δημητριάδης
Abstract

The author attempts to describe the town of Yanitsa (Turkish Yenidje-Vardar) near Thessaloniki, as it was during the end of 19th century. He gets his information from the Turkish land registers and the land-tax ones, kept at the Historical Archives of Macedonia, in Thessaloniki. After a brief description of the registers, he presents the results of his research, and gives the names of the Turkish and Greek districts, the names of the roads and the numbers of houses and shops in every district. He comes to the conclusion that the town had 1.483 Moslem houses divided in ten districts, and 925Christian houses divided in four districts. A map of the old town is provided, where the names of roads and districts as well as the sites of several Turkish monuments, preserved until today, have been added by the author.
