Abstract

This paper examines the impacts of maritime infrastructure development across four distinct Greek regions—Northern Evia, Eastern Mani, Kassos, Kastelorizo and Nafpaktos—with a focus on the interplay between economic growth, cultural preservation, and environmental sustainability. Through a comprehensive analy-sis incorporating case studies and comparative assessments, the research identi-fies the significant economic benefits and increased tourist accessibility resulting from enhanced maritime facilities. However, it also highlights the accompanying challenges, including environmental risks and the complexities of integrating modern infrastructure within culturally rich and ecologically sensitive areas. The findings demonstrate that while maritime infrastructure projects can substantially boost local economies and improve connectivity, they necessitate a balanced ap-proach that prioritizes sustainable practices and robust community engagement. The paper advocates for the adoption of Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP) as a critical tool for achieving these goals, emphasizing the importance of multi-stakeholder collaboration in ensuring that development efforts align with both lo-cal and regional sustainability objectives.
The study contributes to the broader discourse on sustainable development in coastal regions, offering insights and recommendations that are applicable to similar maritime environments facing the dual challenges of economic develop-ment and environmental stewardship. By highlighting the need for an integrated approach that respects cultural heritage and natural landscapes, this research pro-vides a blueprint for future infrastructure projects aiming to harmonize economic benefits with long-term sustainability.
