Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The Article submitted is an original work, it has not been published previously, nor is it under consideration for publication elsewhere, either in print or in electronic form.
  • To the best of my knowledge the Article does not defame any person, does not invade the privacy of any person, and does not in any other manner infringe upon the rights of any person.
  • The Article does not in any way violate intellectual property rights of third parties. Wherever permission is required, I have obtained it from the copyright holder.
  • I have read and I accept the Copyright Policy and have prepared the manuscript according to the Author Guidelines of the Journal.
  • I grant to the journal a royalty‐free, worldwide nonexclusive license perform all necessary actions to publish first the article in an issue of the Journal.
  • I retain ownership and/or I am the lawful right-holder of all rights under copyright in the Articles, and I reserve all rights not expressly granted in this Agreement.
  • The Journal reserves the right to further license the Article to any third party in order to be further used, distributed or communicated to the public by any means, including the Internet or other electronic communications
  • In any case of re‐publication of the Article, AWPEL will be given first publication acknowledgement authorized by me and all other co‐authors.
  • I have the full power and authority to provide the warranties and agree to the license granted by virtue of verifying all the above statements.

Author Guidelines

The submitted manuscripts should be in a Microsoft Word file, in Times New Roman, font size 12 and line spacing 1.5 for the main text. Footnotes and bibliographic references should be in Times New Roman, font size of 10 and single line spacing.

The authors are kindly requested to take into consideration the following guidelines:

 

Title

The title of each manuscript should be as short as possible in Greek and English, and should not exceed 170 characters (without spaces).

 

Authors

The full names of the authors, their position and the authors’ institutional affiliations where the work was conducted, should be provided in Greek and English. The corresponding author should be marked with an asterisk (*). In addition, the e-mail address of each author should be provided.

 

Abstract

Each submitted manuscript will be accompanied by a short Abstract, up to 700 words, in Greek and English.

 

Keywords

Each submitted manuscript will be accompanied by up to 5 keywords, in Greek and English.

 

Main text

The submitted Original Articles should not exceed 7,000 words (including footnotes and bibliographic references). Reviews should not exceed 8,000 words (including footnotes and bibliographic references).

The authors are requested to pay attention to the internal structure and organization of their text, by providing subdivisions (e.g. Modules, Chapters etc.). It is recommended, but not obligatory, that the manuscripts should include: Introduction, Scientific Data, Ethical Issues, Legal Issues, and Conclusions.

The authors are requested ΝΟΤ to use bold or underline. Italics should be used in order to emphasize part of the text.

It is also recommended to use the Greek quotation marks («…») when the quote within the quotation marks is in Greek, and English quotation marks (“…”) when the quote within the quotation marks is in English. The same applies, of course, regarding the French language, so the use of French quotation marks («…») is recommended. When a part of the text enclosed in quotation marks includes words or sentences that need to be enclosed in other quotation marks, then curly quotes (“…”) should be used when the manuscript is in Greek, and single quotes (‘…’) should be used when the manuscript is in English.

Πχ. «H σημασία των “οδηγιών μη ανάνηψης” έχει νόημα μόνον όταν ο θεράπων κρίνει ότι η αναζωογόνηση δεν θα έχει μονιμότερο αποτέλεσμα».

E.g. “Thus, aspects of the human dignity are traced back to the stoic tradition”.

When there are quotation marks in the text, the period or comma is always marked after the closing quotation mark. The same applies regarding the use of parentheses, brackets, etc. No period is marked after the question mark, exclamation mark and ellipsis.

E.g. “The concept of ‘do-not-resuscitate orders’ is crucial only when the treating physician judges that there is no permanent effect”.

 

Footnote markers are noted after the punctuation marks.

E.g. It is important to safeguard the basic rights to privacy and data protection.1

E.g. For example, both proponents and opponents of euthanasia resort to the same principle, that of dignity, to support opposing positions.2

E.g. These data become open,1 and therefore, can be used by everyone.

 

Periods in acronyms should be avoided.

E.g. UN, instead of  U.N.

When referring to a bibliographic reference just mentioned above, Idem and the page (when different) are used. If the page is the same, so it is the same reference, Ibidem is used. Op.cit. is used to refrain from repeating a reference that we have already mentioned above in the text:

E.g. E. Mavrias, Constitutional Law, Sakkoulas publications, Athens-Komotini, 2005, p. 405.

Bibliography/References

The bibliographic references in the text are numbered in ascending numbers according to the order of appearance in the text. The same order and number are mentioned in the reference list, which contains all the references of the text.

In the reference list, the following particulars should be mentioned for each reference in the following order:

-        the surnames and the first letter of the names (without periods between them) of the authors (without “and” before the last author),

-        the title of the article,

-        the official abbreviation of the journal name (without periods),

-        the year of issue,

-        the volume number (not the number of the issue, except for a supplement, in which case a supplement number is indicated),

-        the first and last page.

E.g. Singh AK, Singh S, Singh MP. Bioethics: a new frontier of biological science. Cell Mol Biol 2012, 58: 110-4.

 

In the case of a book or monograph, the following particulars should be mentioned, in the following order:

-        the name of the author,

-        the title,

-        the number of issue (if more than one has been made),

-        the publisher,

-        the year of issue,

-        the pages of the reference.

E.g. Holland S. Arguing About Bioethics. Routledge, 2012: 30-40.

 

In the case of a chapter in a book, after the names of the editor (editors), the title of the book is mentioned.

E.g.  Massy SG, Klein KL. Effects of bile duct ligation on renal function. In: Epstein M (ed) The Kidney in liver disease. Elsevier, New York, 1978:58-82.

 

The authors are also requested to mention the dates using periods in between, without using zeros in the days or the months.

E.g. 2.8.2011

 

Tables

The tables should be referred to the relevant points of the text where they correspond and are should be numbered with ascending Arabic numerals. Each table should be typed in a single line spacing on a separate page. At the top of the page, all tables must have a legend with a short title.

 

Figures

Figures are submitted electronically as TIFF or JPEG files.

Photos, diagrams, shapes etc. are treated in the papers as images. They should be referred to the relevant points in the text where they correspond and should be numbered with ascending Arabic numerals. At the bottom of each figure, there should be a legend with the title and the necessary explanations.

 

Abbreviations

The first time that abbreviations of words or terms are mentioned in the abstract or in the text, the full description and the abbreviation should be given in parenthesis. Thereafter use the abbreviation only.

 

Acknowledgments

Acknowledgments are directed only to individuals with a substantial contribution to the manuscript, which must be specifically mentioned.

Copyright Notice

Authors who publish with this journal agree to the following terms:

  • Authors retain copyright and grant the journal right of first publication with the work simultaneously licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution  CC BY 4.0 that allows others to share the work with an acknowledgement of the work's authorship and initial publication in this journal.
  • Authors are able to enter into separate, additional contractual arrangements for the non-exclusive distribution of the journal's published version of the work (e.g. post it to an institutional repository or publish it in a book), with an acknowledgement of its initial publication in this journal.

Bioethica permits and encourages authors to archive the final publication pdf  in institutional (e.g. the repository of the National Hellenic Research Foundation) or other appropriate subject repositories (e.g. SSOAR repository for social sciences),  in compliance with institutional and/or funder open access policies, after publication in Bioethica. Authors must provide bibliographic details that credit publication in the journal, as well as related funding details (when applicable).
