Author Biography
Stephen G. Xydis, Political Science Hunter College, City University of New York

Stephen G. Xydis, Professor in the Department of Political
Science at Hunter College, City University of New York,
specializes in international politics, organization and law.
He is the author of Cyprus Reluctant Republic (The Hague,
1973), Cyprus .'Conflict and Conciliation 1954-1958 (Columbus,
Ohio, 1967), and Greece and the Great Powers 1944-1947
(Thessaloniki, 1963). He contributed chapters on the UN
General Assembly in J. Barros, ed.,The United Nations: Past,
Present, and Future (New York, 1971) and on «Modern Greek
Nationalism», in I. Lederer and P. Suguar, eds., Nationalism
in Eastern Europe (Seattle, 1969). He has also published
articles in the Journal of Conflict Resolution, The Middle
East Journal, The Slavic Review, and Balkan Studies, among
other periodicals, as well as numerous book reviews.
After graduating from Athens University with a degree
in politics and economics, he studied history of art and archaeology
at the Courtauld Institute in London (1937-1939),
took a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Princeton University
(1941) and was a junior fellow at Dumbarton Oaks, Harvard
University (1942-1943). He later took his Ph.D. in international
politics and law from Columbia University. Between 1946
and 1948, he served in the Department of Public Information
of the UN Secretariat. He has also done consultant work
for Life and the Hudson Institute.
