Author Biography
J.P. Roos, University of Joensuu

J. P. Roos was bom in Helsinki, Finland, in 1945. He studied
social policy and economics at the University of Helsinki,
where he obtained his M.A in 1966, then at the University of
Chicago (M.A 69) and again at the University of Helsinki. The
subject of his Ph. D. thesis published in 1973 was Welfare
theory and social policy. A study in policy science (Societas
scientiarum Fennica, Helsinki 1973). He is currently Associate
Professor in Social Policy at the University of Joensuu in
Eastern Finland. Previously he has acted as Assistant Professor
at the University of Helsinki, visiting lecturer at the
School of Architecture and Urban Planning at UCLA, research
fellow at the Academy of Finland. His research interests
include welfare questions, social planning and problems
of social policy and planning in the socialist countries. Presently
he is engaged in a research project to compare the
specific ways of life in Poland and Finland. He has published
some fifty articles and books, several of them in English or
Swedish.
