Abstract

This article provides an overview of Just War Theory, examining the ethical justifications for armed conflict. The author distinguishes between the two primary pillars of the theory: jus ad bellum (the right to go to war) and jus in bello (right conduct within war). The discussion explores the historical and philosophical foundations of these concepts, questioning whether war can ever be morally justified in the modern global political landscape, especially given the development of weapons of mass destruction. The study evaluates specific criteria such as proportionality, just cause, and the protection of non-combatants. Ultimately, the author suggests that while the theory is often manipulated to serve specific interests, its existence provides essential, albeit rudimentary, constraints on unregulated human aggression.
