The Frangochiotika Book Collection in the Jesuit Library of Greece Characteristics and Particularities
Abstract
This article explores the Frangochiotika collection housed in the Jesuit Library of Greece, which comprises 92 unique publications with a rich history tied to the Aegean Islands and the Catholic Church. The collection, developed over four decades by Fr Sevastianos Freris and supported by contributions from various donors, includes works primarily published in the nineteenth century that reflect religious themes and cultural exchanges within the Ottoman Empire. Key items range from grammars and spiritual texts to liturgical booklets, showcasing the diversity of printed material available to the clergy. This contribution emphasises the importance of preserving and cataloguing such publications to facilitate access for researchers and promote the significance of religious literature in the region.
