Abstract

This article focuses on the Greek public debate that tries to interpret the current economic crisis by using as a case study the discourse developed by the news group SKAI (radio and TV channels, news webpage, newspaper Kathimerin'i). By applying Critical Discourse Analysis and elements of a Political Economy approach, we argue that these particular media have constructed a coherent discourse based on the following interpretative frameworks: i) the rhetorical rejection of ideology and its substitution by the concept of effectiveness ii) the anti-populist argumentation which is based on Manichean distinctions that ultimately result to a so-called "technocratic" fetishism iii) anti-party arguments that involve elements of a latent authoritarianism iv) volunteerism and private initiative presented as the preferred reaction to the crisis and, thus, they sum up the effort to revise the public-private relationship.
