Abstract
This article examines electoral behavior on the basis of party loyalty. What we seek to measure is the transition probability of the voting in consecutive electoral contests. Aggregate election results for the 1990 and 1992 elections are used as the basis for estimating the extent of the voting flow. The unit of analysis is the second Athens electoral district, which is the largest electoral district in Greece. Our analysis makes use of electoral results in each municipality included in the second Athens district. In other words, we regard the municipality as a compact subset of the district. Two types of criteria are used in the analysis: socioeconomic status and the percentage of the vote attained by each of the major political parties in the preceding election.
