Abstract

The present study attempts to highlight some of the ethical implications of the concept of
debt. More specifically, having as a starting point the assumption that one must pay one's
debts, we examine debt as a moral command through the example of the Christian faith, then
applying it to the historical context of the economic crisis in Greece. The hypothesis of this
study is that we can observe a structural relevance between the believer and the indebted
man, while the argument is that the subject is recognized as an indebted subject through
precisely this command. Methodologically, the analysis takes place in the context of
Lacanian psychoanalytic theory.
