Περίληψη
Η πρωτεΐνη που δεσμεύει τα στεροειδή του φύλου (SBP) είναι μια πρωτείνη του πλάσματος, η οποία δεσμεύει με μεγάλη συγγένεια ανδρογόνα και οιστρογόνα. Συντίθεται στο ήπαρ και κυκλοφορεί στο πλάσμα διαφόρων ειδών, μεταξύ των οποίων άνθρωπος, πίθηκος, αγελάδα, σκύλος, γάτα και άλλα. Η SBP είναι μια διμερής πρωτείνη με μοριακή μάζα που κυμαίνεται ανάμεσα σε 84 και 90 KDa, και δεσμεύει ένα μόριο στεροειδούς σε κάθε διμερές. Η έκφραση της ρυθμίζεται από πολλές ορμόνες και έχει βρεθεί ότι η οιστραδιόλη επάγει, ενώ η τεστοστερόνη αναστέλλει την έκφραση της. Ο φυσιολογικόςτης ρόλος δεν είναι απολύτως γνωστός αλλά είναι σχεδόν βέβαιο ότι ρυθμίζει τουλάχιστον τα επίπεδα των βιοδιαθέσιμων κυκλοφορούντων στεροειδών και πειραματική απόδειξη υποστηρίζει το δόγμα ότι τα στεροειδδή που δεν είναι δεσμευμένα είναι αυτά που είναι δραστικά βιολογικά, αφού μπορούν παθητικά να περάσουν την κυτταρική μεμβράνη και να δράσουν. Μετά την ανακάλυψη του μεμβρανικού υποδοχέα της SBP φαίνεται ότι η πρωτεΐνη αυτή παίζει και άλλους βιολογικούς ρόλους εκτός από αυτόν της δέσμευσης των στεροειδών.
