Challenges in the establishment of the fiscal apparatus in revolutionary Peloponnese through the case of the province of Pyrgos
Abstract
The study examines the challenges surrounding the establishment of a taxation mechanism in revolutionary Peloponnese with particular emphasis on the province of Pyrgos. It investigates the difficulties that emerged in the formation of the fiscal apparatus and analyzes the methods, strategies, and practices adopted by the parties involved in the conflicts triggered
by the concession of national incomes, first to an individual outside the province and subsequently to a group of local notables. Furthermore, the study considers the handling of the issue by the institutions of central administration, including the Provincial Governor, the Legislative Body, and the Ministry of the Interior, highlighting the internal contradictions revealed by their actions and the political discourse articulated through the writings of the opposing alliances.
