Abstract

The present paper aims to highlight the key role that home tutors / supervisors play in the provision of effective primary distance education in Australia. The research focused on the reasons that make an adult supervisor an essential component of a primary distance education context as well as on the difficulties a home supervisor is faced with. A literature search and a case study of the Distance Education Centre Victoria (DECV), which is one of the most successful distance education schools in Australia today, were used as data collection tools. More specifically, important data and information have been derived from a telephone interview with a teacher of the school. The findings from this project showed that the effectiveness of the specific educational programs primarily rely on the interest, the level of education, and the competence of the home supervisor as well as on the interaction and the communication between him, the teacher and the young student.
