Distance collaborative education within the framework of digital learning communities as a medium of enhancing emotional intelligence of children with learning difficulties
Abstract
On the basis of modern theoretical and pedagogical approaches socio -constructive and socio-cultural teaching and learning methods are developed by the use of Information and Communication Technologies. By organizing an Online Educational Social Network (DEKD) members can act as Digital Learning Community (DLC), a community of sharing knowledge, ideas, opinions, methodologies, tools and training materials (lesson plans, worksheets, activities files), aiming at the acquisition of basic skills, including emotional intelligence, and thus the improvement of teaching act. Still, the DLC provide a learning environment and interaction interlearning, which engages actively the students in their personal construction of knowledge, and their members are istinguished by a great desire for communication and learning(Bostock,
1998; Kim, 2000; Porterfield, 2001; Goodfellow, 2003). The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect that the participation of students with learning difficulties in DLC might have on the enhancing of their emotional intelligence. Thirty-two children of implemented under the Flexible Zone and had the subject "The rights of children" using as an interaction environment DLC that were developed through the online Gmail Groups service. The occasion was the escalation of the refugee problem, which is a dominant part of the international and Greek affairs. The development of emotional intelligence of students with learning disabilities was assessed by a questionnaire which created specifically for this purpose before and after students' participation in the DLC. Data analysis showed that the distance learning held on DLC significantly improved the emotional intelligence of students with learning difficulties.
