Using Drupal to Build a MOOC for the Implementation of Microlearning and Self Directed Learning

Abstract
Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) are open online courses offered by major universities, free to everyone, anywhere in the world. Hundreds or tens of thousands of learners enrollee in MOOCs but completion rate is extremely low, sometimes less than 10%. There is a need to explore new and more engaging forms of pedagogy to improve retention. According to Sofianopoulou and Kamilali Microlearning and Self Directed Learning theories can be combined in an educational context. In order to study the implementation of Microlearning and Self-Directed Learning a MOOC was designed and hosted on a Drupal website. Taking into account the requirements of these theories, the necessary Drupal functions were sought and the methods of implementation were recorded. The aim of this paper is to describe MOOC's design and implementation methodology for applying the Microlearning and Self-Directed Learning (SDL) theories using Drupal CMS.
