Alexandra Voutzouraki
Alexandra Voutzouraki was born in Rethymno, Greece. She holds a PhD from the Department of Theatre Studies at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA). She is an honours graduate of the: Department of Psychology at Panteion University, the Drama School of the National Theatre of Greece, the Department of Theatre Studies at NKUA, and its Postgraduate Programme. She is currently a tenure-track Assistant Professor at the Department of Theatre Studies, NKUA, and also teaches at the Drama School Kalvos–Kalampokis “Athenian Stage.” She has previously taught acting at IEK Omiros (2019–2023) and modern Greek theatre at the Department of Philology, University of Crete (2021–2022). Her research focuses on modern Greek theatre of the 20th century. She has presented papers at national and international conferences and has published articles in peer-reviewed journals in Greece and abroad (Itinera, Manticora. Italian Journal of Performance Studies, Rivista di letteratura comparata italiana, bizantina e neoellinica, Scientific Yearbook of the Faculty of Philosophy, Kefalliniaka Chronika, Parnassos). Her studies are included in the collective volumes Επιστροφή στην έσω θίασο: νέες προσεγγίσεις στο έργο του Ιάκωβου Καμπανέλλη (Return to the Inner Troupe: New Approaches to the Work of Iakovos Kambanellis), ed. Pefanis, Papazisis, 2023. Her monograph Η σεξουαλικότητα στο ελληνικό θέατρο, 1900–1940 (Sexuality in Greek Theatre, 1900-1940) was published by Papazisis in spring 2025.
In parallel with her academic work, she has an active presence in the professional theatre as an actress, director, and translator. She has collaborated with both public and private theatre companies and with directors including Dimitris Degaitis, Diagoras Chronopoulos, Nikos Charalambous, Theodoros Kalvos, and Michalis Kalampokis. She has directed the productions Τι είπε ο Όσκαρ Ουάιλντ (What Oscar Wilde Said) by Alexandra Voutzouraki — an adaptation of Neil LaBute’s The Shape of Things (Nixon Theatre, 2006–2007); Murder in Luxembourg by Agatha Christie (Paramythias Theatre, 2012–2013); Γειτόνισσες (Neighbours) by Pantelis Horn (Athenian Stage, 2016–2017); Clothing the Naked by Luigi Pirandello (Athenian Stage, 2017–2018); Φυλο-νικία (Gender-Dispute) by Alexandra Voutzouraki — an adaptation of Marivaux’s La Dispute (Athenian Stage, 2019–2020); Colpert by David Gieselmann (Nous Theatre, 2022–2023); H δούλα. Η αλήθεια πίσω από τον Πειρασμό του Γρ. Ξενόπουλου (The Maid: The Truth Behind Xenopoulos’ Temptation) by Alexandra Voutzouraki — an adaptation of Grigorios Xenopoulos’ Πειρασμός (Temptation) (Athenian Stage, 2022–2023); and The Rehearsal by Jean Anouilh (Nous Theatre, 2023–2024). Her play Monster premiered in autumn 2024 at the experimental stage of Östgötateatern in Norrköping, Sweden, directed by R. Sawis, and was subsequently presented at Mikro Gloria Theatre (2024–2025 season).
As a translator, she has rendered into Greek numerous major plays, including The Children’s Hour by Lillian Hellman, An Open Couple by Dario Fo, Race by David Mamet, Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig, Indian Wants the Bronx by Israel Horovitz, Woyzeck by Georg Büchner, The Madmen of Valencia by Lope de Vega, Macbeth by William Shakespeare, Clothing the Naked by Luigi Pirandello, and Spring Awakening by Frank Wedekind.
